horizontalbar

We're celebrating this national event, and we want you to join the fun! Cat ownership is a joy for millions of people across the country. Are you missing out?

Check out these fascinating facts, and get on the happy train. Adopt a shelter cat today!

  • Owning a cat can reduce your risk of heart attack by 30 percent (feline-less people were 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those with cats)
  • Cats owners have been found to have lower anxiety, blood and cholesterol levels than individuals that do not have a cat
  • Children who are in a home with cats miss nine days less of school a year than children who do not live with cats
  • Cat owning children are more likely to be involved in sports, hobbies, clubs, and other social activities and have a higher IQ

A study of 100 people aged 20-40 years old found:

  • Nearly half of respondents enjoyed a better night's sleep with their cat on the bed than they did with their partner in the bed!

A study of 500 cat owners aged 55 years old and older revealed:

  • 82% found that their cat helped them overcome feelings of stress
  • 62% said cat ownership helped overcome feelings of loneliness

A study of 100 cat owners aged 13 years and under found:

  • 80% said their cat helped them get along better with family and friends
  • 81% said they would rather chat to their cat about their feelings, than to their parents or friends
  • 87% of children regard their cat as a "close friend"

Adoption Process
horizontalbar

  1. If you are interested in adopting a pet from Orange County Animal Services, the first step is to come to the shelter and interact with the pet you wish to adopt.
  2. Once you have interacted with the pet, submit an adoption application and pay the adoption fees.
  3. Our customer service representatives will verify your address. Please note that it may be necessary to contact your landlord or the Orange County Property Appraiser.
  4. Some pets require special care, housing, and handling. To ensure an environment conducive to those needs, a home visit may be required prior to final approval of your adoption application. Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Doberman, and Chow Chow dog breeds require a mandatory home inspection.
  5. Once your application is approved, your pet will be ready to go home in 5-10 working days. This allows for health and temperament assessments to be conducted, and satisfies the hold time required under the Orange County Code.
  6. Please note that if an owner reclaims the pet you have requested to adopt, you can select another pet or receive a refund.
