Homeless Pets Find Homes During Adopt-a-Pet
Please Adopt Me Mascot

By Vanessa Bouffard-Fehl, Animal Services Division

The only thing missing was a clown…it was a carnival atmosphere on the grounds of Orange County Animal Services. Kids covered themselves in cotton candy, families enjoyed free hot dogs, chips and cold drinks. But most important, on this day, Animal Services shelter on Conroy Road helped more than 50 homeless pets find homes.

Every year thousands of unwanted, abandoned, or lost pets end up in shelters across Orange County. Last year alone, the county's shelter received close to 15,000 animals. In efforts to increase adoptions, Orange County Animal Services hosted the first annual Adopt-a-Thon on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28.

The goal was to create community awareness about adopting shelter pets. The idea was born from the Central Florida Animal Coalition – a group that consists of animal services groups from Orange, Seminole, and Polk Counties and the local Humane Society. Although each partner celebrated the event at their shelter individually, the main event for Orange County took place on March 27, where people enjoyed free food and snacks, all donations from local businesses. In addition, they received information on pet care and ownership from local pet experts. Animal Services welcomed close to 600 members of the public during the weekend, all looking to find their next best friend.

Special hours for the Adopt-a-Thon were extended to Sunday for that weekend only. Adoption rates were the regular price of  $35 for cats and $45 for Dogs. The fees included spaying or neutering, rabies vaccination and an identification chip for all pets before they went to their new home.

The Animal Services Division thanks all vendors and sponsors. Especially, The Coca Cola Company, Multi Travel Connection, Wal-Mart, BJ's Wholesale Club, StarBucks Coffee, Orange County Parks and Recreation, Citizen's Commission for Children, and Alley Cat Orphans, Inc. for their generous contributions. Thanks to their support abandoned and neglected pets got a second chance to live long and healthy lives in safe, loving homes.
