Neighborhood Gatherings and Events

Neighborhood Services strongly encourages neighborhood organizations to hold neighborhood events and social gatherings, opportunities for neighbors to come together to get to know each other.  This is the best way to build community.

Make it a party, a project, or a potluck event. The purpose of a neighborhood gathering is to rekindle friendships, welcome new neighbors, and learn about neighborhood history, each other's families, interests, needs, and more.  Neighborhood gathering can be useful when making a neighborhood list of assets, including existing and potential members, partners, etc., or when planning a neighborhood service or improvement project – whatever inspires you and your neighbors.

Some ideas for a neighborhood gathering or special event include:

  • Block party
  • Backyard BBQ
  • Bake sale
  • Spaghetti supper
  • Invite the neighbors in for dessert
  • Organize a picnic at the local school
  • Organize a cookie exchange
  • Ice Cream Social
  • Bingo Breakfast
  • Yard/garage sale
  • Taste of the neighborhood
  • Kids performance/play
  • Battle of the Bands
  • Games – ultimate Frisbee, basketball, etc.
  • Game night (cards or board games)
  • Neighborhood-wide yard or garage sales - Requires permit
  • Arts & crafts festival
  • Holiday Caroling
  • Holiday lighting contest
  • Most improved yard contest
  • Food drive
  • July 4th celebration
  • Outdoor film festival
  • Neighborhood clean-up day
  • Voters registration drive
  • Paint a neighborhood mural
  • Crime walk - walk to gather with flashlights and bright clothing

Remember to follow these simple steps when organizing a successful neighborhood event:

  • Select activities to help neighbors meet & greet one another
  • At the event, gather people's contact information & interests
  • Have fun meeting your neighbors
  • Follow up - evaluate your event and determine what did or did not work about the event
  • Remember to say thank you to everyone that helped!
National Neighborhood Day

National Neighborhood Day....The good feeling lasts all year!

People in neighborhoods all across America realize the value of simple gatherings, sharing food and fun, while discovering the diversity that makes America great.  If you and your neighbors wish to hold an event in your neighborhood but need assistance with ideas and helpful resources to help you plan it, then, learn how other neighborhoods across America are joining together and participating in National Neighborhood Day.

What is National Neighborhood Day (NND)?

National Neighborhood Day takes place annually, the third Sunday in September. NND was created to "inspire, build, and sustain the neighborhood relationships that provide the foundation for civic action and the building of stronger, more caring and effective communities."

A single day to serve as a rallying point - an easy reminder to annually "refresh" neighborhood connections – that is why the
third Sunday in September works well with NND partners' annual calendars and fits with most school schedules. And the weather is usually nice!

Orange County and the City of Orlando have joined efforts since 2006 to locally recognize National Neighborhood Day and to jointly encourage residents to participate and celebrate National Neighborhood Day a wonderful opportunity for residents to come together.
