Green Building, an approach to building, can be described as energy and environmental integration. Green Building techniques include proper window orientation, the use of ceiling fans, window shading and light colored surfaces, energy efficient appliances and lighting, pollution reduction and solar water heating.
There is still a lot of confusion about exactly what green building is. For most experts, there are five main characteristics that define it:
- Having an environmentally friendly site selection or "footprint"
- Using energy efficient heating, cooling and lighting designs and materials
- Reducing a home's water consumption through low-flow fixtures
- Promoting a healthy indoor air environment
- Emphasizing material conservation and waste reduction while using sustainable products in design and construction
Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. Elements of green building include:
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources
- Water stewardship
- Waste reduction
- Environmentally preferable building materials and specifications
